Narrative:
Our tug driver temporarily stopped our pushback short of the normal pushback distance due to the close proximity of an aircraft that had pushed back from an adjacent gate. We soon felt a shudder and suspected that we may have been struck by the adjacent aircraft. We asked the tug driver if we had been struck and he confirmed our suspicions after conferring with a wing walker. We shut down the right engine; which had been started during pushback and were towed back into the gate.wing walkers and guides should remain in the vicinity of aircraft to clear the area before an aircraft taxis. Guides would be dismissed by flashing the taxi light upon our intent to taxi.
