Narrative:
The situation was I misidented V276 inbound to rbv VOR. After departure from allaire airport, I was given a heading to intercept V276. I was having a problem with the heading indicator. It drifted some 30 degrees on climb out. Later in flight, it failed. I looked at the chart and found V276, dialed in the VOR right. The problem was I dialed in the outbnd radial instead of the inbound (289 degrees instead of 302 degrees). A few mins later the approach controller asked if I was established on V276. I said I was, and told him the radial 289 degrees. He pointed out the error. I admitted the error and asked for corrective action. He then cleared me direct rbv VOR. The human performance factor was I made a mistake. Other contributing factors were: I was distracted by the dg, and don't have much night IFR experience. Also was unfamiliar with this particular aircraft. Judgement factors were: I didn't double-check the arwy and the radial. I took the first radial on V276 at rbv VOR I saw. I was also pushing to get home before the WX closed in. Experience is the key to avoiding this type of mistake in the future.

Title: PLT OF SMA, IFR AT NIGHT, MISREADS CHART AND NAVIGATES ON OUTBOUND RATHER THAN INBOUND RADIAL.
Narrative: THE SITUATION WAS I MISIDENTED V276 INBND TO RBV VOR. AFTER DEP FROM ALLAIRE ARPT, I WAS GIVEN A HDG TO INTERCEPT V276. I WAS HAVING A PROB WITH THE HDG INDICATOR. IT DRIFTED SOME 30 DEGS ON CLBOUT. LATER IN FLT, IT FAILED. I LOOKED AT THE CHART AND FOUND V276, DIALED IN THE VOR R.
