Narrative:
First officer flying J73 tth to bna J45 atl. First officer completing engine logbook entries and captain (myself) completing flight time/payroll paperwork. First officer continued beyond bna instead of turning onto J45 and I didn't notice the error until center advised us to change frequency to ZTL. Immediately directed first officer to turn and intercept J45 (bna 144 degree radial) with a 40 degree intercept. Heading to return to filed/cleared course. First officer was new hire but had 25 yrs experience and I was lulled into believing he could do job without supervision normally accorded new first officer still flying with same first officer this month and have noticed that he is having a difficult time making transition from corporate single pilot environment to turbojet airline crew flying. I must not allow previous experience of new hire to encourage me to forget that everything is new to him/her and that I must be more vigilant and helpful than with an experienced first officer. Problem brought on by period or rapid expansion of airline after a long period of relative stability.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR FLT CREW FLEW BEYOND FIX WHERE HEADING CHANGE SHOULD HAVE OCCURRED TO INTERCEPT AIRWAY.
Narrative: F/O FLYING J73 TTH TO BNA J45 ATL. F/O COMPLETING ENGINE LOGBOOK ENTRIES AND CAPT (MYSELF) COMPLETING FLT TIME/PAYROLL PAPERWORK. F/O CONTINUED BEYOND BNA INSTEAD OF TURNING ONTO J45 AND I DIDN'T NOTICE THE ERROR UNTIL CENTER ADVISED US TO CHANGE FREQ TO ZTL. IMMEDIATELY DIRECTED F/O TO TURN AND INTERCEPT J45 (BNA 144 DEG RADIAL) WITH A 40 DEG INTERCEPT. HDG TO RETURN TO FILED/CLRED COURSE. F/O WAS NEW HIRE BUT HAD 25 YRS EXPERIENCE AND I WAS LULLED INTO BELIEVING HE COULD DO JOB WITHOUT SUPERVISION NORMALLY ACCORDED NEW F/O STILL FLYING WITH SAME F/O THIS MONTH AND HAVE NOTICED THAT HE IS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME MAKING TRANSITION FROM CORPORATE SINGLE PLT ENVIRONMENT TO TURBOJET AIRLINE CREW FLYING. I MUST NOT ALLOW PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE OF NEW HIRE TO ENCOURAGE ME TO FORGET THAT EVERYTHING IS NEW TO HIM/HER AND THAT I MUST BE MORE VIGILANT AND HELPFUL THAN WITH AN EXPERIENCED F/O. PROBLEM BROUGHT ON BY PERIOD OR RAPID EXPANSION OF AIRLINE AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF RELATIVE STABILITY.
