Narrative:

Commuter inbound to dfw assigned heading 290 to join scy.9 arrival, 6000'. Acting first officer captain observed small aircraft eastbound at 6000 over scy VOR area, rapid closure rate and not turning, heading straight for us. Reached for autoplt disconnect to make left turn to avoid 210. Since normally autoplt disconnect is on captain's left, instinctively reached to wrong side of yoke, tried to overpwr autoplt. Small aircraft passed slightly off our right, extremely close. By the time evasive turn was initiated small aircraft had passed. Pilot reported 'we just had a near miss' to approach. Approach replied that traffic had us in sight. Pilot reported that the aircraft was a blue and white small aircraft eastbound at 6000. The airspace north the arrs to dal and dfw is heavily congested at times and weekend pilot had no business on an arrival at standard arrival altitude. This is another in a sequence of near misses in the dallas regional area. Someone has to devise a system to keep the turboprops up high longer to avoid general aviation aircraft or there is soon to be a major accident/midair with fatalities. This one was way too close.

Title: FLT CREW OF COMMUTER AT 6000 STARTING APCH TO DFW HAD NMAC WITH SMA.

Narrative: COMMUTER INBND TO DFW ASSIGNED HDG 290 TO JOIN SCY.9 ARR, 6000'. ACTING F/O CAPT OBSERVED SMA EBND AT 6000 OVER SCY VOR AREA, RAPID CLOSURE RATE AND NOT TURNING, HDG STRAIGHT FOR US. REACHED FOR AUTOPLT DISCONNECT TO MAKE LEFT TURN TO AVOID 210. SINCE NORMALLY AUTOPLT DISCONNECT IS ON CAPT'S LEFT, INSTINCTIVELY REACHED TO WRONG SIDE OF YOKE, TRIED TO OVERPWR AUTOPLT. SMA PASSED SLIGHTLY OFF OUR RIGHT, EXTREMELY CLOSE. BY THE TIME EVASIVE TURN WAS INITIATED SMA HAD PASSED. PLT REPORTED 'WE JUST HAD A NEAR MISS' TO APCH. APCH REPLIED THAT TFC HAD US IN SIGHT. PLT REPORTED THAT THE ACFT WAS A BLUE AND WHITE SMA EBND AT 6000. THE AIRSPACE N THE ARRS TO DAL AND DFW IS HEAVILY CONGESTED AT TIMES AND WEEKEND PLT HAD NO BUSINESS ON AN ARR AT STANDARD ARR ALT. THIS IS ANOTHER IN A SEQUENCE OF NEAR MISSES IN THE DALLAS REGIONAL AREA. SOMEONE HAS TO DEVISE A SYSTEM TO KEEP THE TURBOPROPS UP HIGH LONGER TO AVOID GENERAL AVIATION ACFT OR THERE IS SOON TO BE A MAJOR ACCIDENT/MIDAIR WITH FATALITIES. THIS ONE WAS WAY TOO CLOSE.
