Narrative:

During climb out from lga, we were cleared to 15000'. Then we were passed to the next departure controller who told us to descend and maintain 12000' as we were passing through 14000' in the climb. While in the descent we were reclred to another higher altitude (17000', I believe). When we asked, no reason for the confusion was given.
