Narrative:

Conflicting visibility approach to runway 03L dtw. Preceding us to land was widebody transport 6 mi ahead. Just prior to T/D in landing flare, left wing suddenly dropped. Touched down left main gear and commanded PF to execute a missed approach. Normal missed approach and subsequent visibility approach and landing made on runway 03L dtw. Upon landing and arrival at gate, conducted post-flight inspection to ensure aircraft integrity. Found left wing tip light, outermost wing tip spar and wing tip trailing edge lights damaged. Wrote up same in aircraft maintenance log book. Discussed damage with maintenance. Contributing factors: 1) left crosswind, 2) very strong wind gust!, 3) suspect residual wing tip vortices from (just cleared runway), 4) target flare speed/close proximity to ground, 5) wind shear!

Title: WING TIP STRIKE DURING LNDG. MINOR ACFT DAMAGE.

Narrative: CONFLICTING VIS APCH TO RWY 03L DTW. PRECEDING US TO LAND WAS WDB 6 MI AHEAD. JUST PRIOR TO T/D IN LNDG FLARE, LEFT WING SUDDENLY DROPPED. TOUCHED DOWN LEFT MAIN GEAR AND COMMANDED PF TO EXECUTE A MISSED APCH. NORMAL MISSED APCH AND SUBSEQUENT VIS APCH AND LNDG MADE ON RWY 03L DTW. UPON LNDG AND ARR AT GATE, CONDUCTED POST-FLT INSPECTION TO ENSURE ACFT INTEGRITY. FOUND LEFT WING TIP LIGHT, OUTERMOST WING TIP SPAR AND WING TIP TRAILING EDGE LIGHTS DAMAGED. WROTE UP SAME IN ACFT MAINT LOG BOOK. DISCUSSED DAMAGE WITH MAINT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) LEFT XWIND, 2) VERY STRONG WIND GUST!, 3) SUSPECT RESIDUAL WING TIP VORTICES FROM (JUST CLRED RWY), 4) TARGET FLARE SPD/CLOSE PROX TO GND, 5) WIND SHEAR!
