Narrative:
Cmh approach control had cleared us to 11000'. At 12500' cmh approach gave us another clearance. I heard it as (first officer was flying) descend/maintain 5000'. I read 'cleared to 5000',' using my flight #. The first officer at that instant set 5000' in altitude arm mode on the FGS. At 7000' approach came back and asked our altitude. I stated 7000', descending to 5000'. Approach said 'it is ok, there are no other aircraft around, but you were cleared to 10000',' but that everything was ok and there was no problem. I stated we had heard our clearance to 5000' and read that back to them. He then said 'cleared to 6000', and there is no problem.' after landing I contacted approach supervisor and he stated there would be no further investigation and no tapes read, and the controller evidently did not hear my readback of 'cleared to 5000'.'

Title: ACR FLT CREW EXPERIENSCE ALT EXCURSION ON MISINTERP OF ALT CLRNC. READBACK NOT CHALLENEGED BY CTLR. ALT DEVIATION CAUGHT LATER.
Narrative: CMH APCH CTL HAD CLRED US TO 11000'. AT 12500' CMH APCH GAVE US ANOTHER CLRNC. I HEARD IT AS (F/O WAS FLYING) DSND/MAINTAIN 5000'. I READ 'CLRED TO 5000',' USING MY FLT #. THE F/O AT THAT INSTANT SET 5000' IN ALT ARM MODE ON THE FGS. AT 7000' APCH CAME BACK AND ASKED OUR ALT. I STATED 7000', DSNDING TO 5000'. APCH SAID 'IT IS OK, THERE ARE NO OTHER ACFT AROUND, BUT YOU WERE CLRED TO 10000',' BUT THAT EVERYTHING WAS OK AND THERE WAS NO PROB. I STATED WE HAD HEARD OUR CLRNC TO 5000' AND READ THAT BACK TO THEM. HE THEN SAID 'CLRED TO 6000', AND THERE IS NO PROB.' AFTER LNDG I CONTACTED APCH SUPVR AND HE STATED THERE WOULD BE NO FURTHER INVESTIGATION AND NO TAPES READ, AND THE CTLR EVIDENTLY DID NOT HEAR MY READBACK OF 'CLRED TO 5000'.'
