Narrative:
Departed roa en route iad with clearance to 15000', 330 degree heading, int roa 020. While still on 330 degree heading, cleared direct casanova. First time on route, held 330 degree heading until we looked up frequency and determined heading (controller very busy). Controller then restr flight to 13000'. Talked to another controller later who stated sep mins were violated. Controllers should issue headings till able direct. Supplemental information from acn 131798: casanova was not even along our proposed or expected route.
