Air carrier flight crew reported the ipad's navigational software did an update automatically causing it to go to a black screen then to the home screen. This causes the ipad as a navigation aid to be undependable.

Narrative:
Software did an update on its own with no way to cancel it; or skip the update. My ipad went to a black screen; then on its own; went back to the home screen. When selecting the software button the last page I had up was the ground taxi page for ZZZ. That page was frozen and you could not select any other function. After a few minutes the ipad would go back to the home screen. We were parked at the gate in ZZZ when this happened.the X app is an inferior product. I don't trust this app for correct information. The lives of the passengers and the flight crew are at risk using this app.
