Narrative:
Late night at det city airport, center control turned us over to tower, but tower did not respond. We tried ground control with the same result. Switched back to center, and he tried to contact tower on the landline, still no response. We switched back to tower with no response. As we got closer to the ground (we were cleared for a visual approach) we executed a go-around, and as we flew by the departure end of the runway we were finally cleared to land by det tower. An uneventful landing followed. Tower told us he was the only one on duty and he had to go to the bathroom!
