Narrative:

During practice maneuvers; our diamond DA42NG experienced a momentary loss of power from the right engine; coupled with an indication that one of the right engine's ecus failed. Both pilots elected to return to [departure airport] immediately while troubleshooting the engine problems. The pilot flying noticed that the right engine would no longer return to idle; and would not re-synchronize with the left engine. We [advised ATC of the situation] a few miles from [the departure airport] because we did not know how the engines would react when we landed and reduced power. The landing was uneventful and both engines cooperated for the procedure.
