Narrative:

After landing decelerating at approximately 100 knots tower controller instructed us to exit the next high speed and hold short of runway xx left. I felt our speed was too fast to make the turn off and told the controller we would take the next taxiway. Upon stating my intentions the controller obviously perturbed told us to essentially hurry off the runway for landing traffic. He then told us to hold short of runway xx left. We acknowledged then he said you know '[taxiway] taxi south on [taxiway] and hold short of xx left at [taxiway] this began to sound punitive. We acknowledged and complied.the aircraft that was behind us touched down as we arrived at the hold bar. The arrival flight behind us held short of runway xx left at [taxiway] or [taxiway]. This controller eventually cleared the other aircraft to cross runway xx left. This controller did not clear us to cross. In fact we waited at least another 5 minutes (I think a total of 8 minutes) before we were cleared to cross. As we were crossing the tower controller condescendingly told us that we need to exit the runway when told to do so (paraphrase). I said I'd agree to disagree. We then waited at [taxiway] holding short of [taxiway]. No apparent traffic in sight. Since the taxiway bridge was closed I figured an aircraft would be crossing the taxiway bridge westbound. So several minutes later another aircraft headed east on [taxiway] from runway xx left passes by us. We then get cleared to taxi and contact ground. No further problems.observations: tower controller is ill-advised to direct aircraft off an active during an active phase of flight. (Landing) my understanding is that tower is to keep communications to a bare minimum during such operations.observation: this controller displayed operational punitive and verbally punitive retribution for his perceived non-compliance with his instruction.observation: this punitive measure may have been passed onto the ground controller as we held short of a taxiway for an extended period of time with no conflicting traffic.fact: landing; decelerating and exiting a runway is a significant and dynamic phase of flight. Especially as pilot flying [and] pilot monitoring duties are transposed as the aircraft slows. Tower short fused commands are distracting and unsafe. Tower should advise to land and exit [taxiway] if able while still on approach. If interval is too tight send the landing aircraft around. Even if frustrated a tower controller should always display professionalism and decorum. Being punitive in action or deed is not only unprofessional but diminishes the profession. Tower should withhold any instruction to arriving aircraft until at a safe taxi speed. He should leave safety of flight decisions to the pilot in command. Those decisions should never be rebuked or second guessed.
