Narrative:
In 6/89 I was inbound for landing at las. I was being vectored to landing. I had the current ATIS. I proceeded to runway 19R and when over the threshold a truck entered the runway from the median. I initiated a go around upon tower instruction. The tower said he cleared me to land to the left runway. I have no specific recollection, but do not dispute the clearance. It would have been safer for me to have landed on the right runway. I believe this was a breakdown of the pilot/ATC environment. ATIS did not reflect a 'closed runway,' nor did the tower instruct me to go around until I was 'down the runway.' the tower should have been able to see me lined up on final--for some time--for runway 19R. I should have repeated the clearance to make sure of true communication. I have learned to be a safer pilot from this incident.
