Narrative:
Returning from aerial mapping mission to base; ATC instructed us to proceed direct to our destination (fxe) from our current location which was just south of pbi at an assigned altitude of 2000 ft MSL. After entering boca airport's class D; ATC advised us that 'radar service is terminated; squawk VFR; frequency change.' after switching and realizing we were still on the edge of class D without establishing communications with tower; we turned southwest to clear the airspace expeditiously. We then contacted the tower at our destination airport prior to entering their airspace. Having just flown through pbi's class D per approach instructions; we assumed they were coordinating with the other towers along our route. It was unclear why ATC terminated our service after their instructions sent us into controlled airspace.
