Narrative:

Early in the approach I put in and idented the localizer in my navigation receiver. On the other side (not in use) of the FLIP-flop system, I had the brooklyn VOR frequency. Apparently when I pushed the marker beacon button I flipped the localizer out and the VOR 'in use.' when approaching the localizer, ATC said I had flown through the localizer and asked me if I wanted vectors for another approach, of if I wanted to try to recover. I asked for vectors. Although I was surprised that I could have gone through the localizer so quickly (I was approaching from northeast), the needle was appropriately swung to the far right when I looked. On making my second approach, the localizer needle was centered (but, of course on the brooklyn VOR, I was now approaching from the southwest), but I was not getting a line G/south. While pondering the problem, the needle swung far right just as ATC asked if I was getting good localizer reception. He immediately recommended that I climb and try again. I did, and immediately noticed the wrong frequency in use. The next approach went west/O incident. ATC did everything correctly, but I should have made one last identify just before localizer intercept.

Title: PLT ON IFR FLT PLAN FLIES THROUGH LOCALIZER AT MOB TWICE WHEN CLEARED TO INTERCEPT BECAUSE HE HAD ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE FREQ CHANGEOVER SWITCH ON HIS NAVIGATION RECEIVER WHILE PRESSING THE MARKER BEACON BUTTON.

Narrative: EARLY IN THE APCH I PUT IN AND IDENTED THE LOC IN MY NAV RECEIVER. ON THE OTHER SIDE (NOT IN USE) OF THE FLIP-FLOP SYS, I HAD THE BROOKLYN VOR FREQ. APPARENTLY WHEN I PUSHED THE MARKER BEACON BUTTON I FLIPPED THE LOC OUT AND THE VOR 'IN USE.' WHEN APCHING THE LOC, ATC SAID I HAD FLOWN THROUGH THE LOC AND ASKED ME IF I WANTED VECTORS FOR ANOTHER APCH, OF IF I WANTED TO TRY TO RECOVER. I ASKED FOR VECTORS. ALTHOUGH I WAS SURPRISED THAT I COULD HAVE GONE THROUGH THE LOC SO QUICKLY (I WAS APCHING FROM NE), THE NEEDLE WAS APPROPRIATELY SWUNG TO THE FAR RIGHT WHEN I LOOKED. ON MAKING MY SECOND APCH, THE LOC NEEDLE WAS CENTERED (BUT, OF COURSE ON THE BROOKLYN VOR, I WAS NOW APCHING FROM THE SW), BUT I WAS NOT GETTING A LINE G/S. WHILE PONDERING THE PROB, THE NEEDLE SWUNG FAR RIGHT JUST AS ATC ASKED IF I WAS GETTING GOOD LOC RECEPTION. HE IMMEDIATELY RECOMMENDED THAT I CLB AND TRY AGAIN. I DID, AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THE WRONG FREQ IN USE. THE NEXT APCH WENT W/O INCIDENT. ATC DID EVERYTHING CORRECTLY, BUT I SHOULD HAVE MADE ONE LAST IDENT JUST BEFORE LOC INTERCEPT.
