Narrative:
I was taxiing my small transport from the propeller shop on the south side of the airport to my hangar on the north side. Ground cleared me to taxi from the propeller shop to FBO on the north side. Furthermore, I was told to hold short of runway 3. However, my taxi route was to cross the northeast end of runway 3, which I considered to be runway 21. Runway 3 was in use and I did not realize nor appreciate that the entire runway at such a time is called runway 3. Since I was at the northeast end, I thought that I was crossing runway 21. Consequently, I crossed the single runway at a time when ATC did not expect me to. I attribute this event to poor communications and misunderstanding.

Title: SMT CROSSED ACTIVE RWY, TAXIING FROM ONE SIDE OF CONTROLLED ARPT TO THE OTHER, ALTHOUGH INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT.
Narrative: I WAS TAXIING MY SMT FROM THE PROP SHOP ON THE S SIDE OF THE ARPT TO MY HANGAR ON THE N SIDE. GND CLRED ME TO TAXI FROM THE PROP SHOP TO FBO ON THE N SIDE. FURTHERMORE, I WAS TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 3. HOWEVER, MY TAXI RTE WAS TO CROSS THE NE END OF RWY 3, WHICH I CONSIDERED TO BE RWY 21. RWY 3 WAS IN USE AND I DID NOT REALIZE NOR APPRECIATE THAT THE ENTIRE RWY AT SUCH A TIME IS CALLED RWY 3. SINCE I WAS AT THE NE END, I THOUGHT THAT I WAS XING RWY 21. CONSEQUENTLY, I CROSSED THE SINGLE RWY AT A TIME WHEN ATC DID NOT EXPECT ME TO. I ATTRIBUTE THIS EVENT TO POOR COMS AND MISUNDERSTANDING.
