Narrative:
On a visibility approach to runway 5R at lax, approach control advised us to follow an air carrier medium large transport Y and pass above and behind that aircraft. The medium large transport Y was approximately 5 mi from our position for the 24 complex. We were on a close in right base. We slowed our aircraft to minimum approach speed, and still we passed slightly in front of the medium large transport Y and 300-400' above him. Both aircraft landed west/O further incident and neither had to make any abrupt maneuvers.I feel the controller should have extended our downwind leg to make it a little more practical to follow the medium large transport Y.
