Narrative:

While in cruise flight; the crew got an EICAS message. The message was hydraulic a volume low. The checklist calls to unload the a hydraulic system. This means that we do not have the a system for landing. The checklist calls for a longer landing distance; less flaps on landing; blow the gear down; and use the emergency brake system for bringing the aircraft to a stop on the runway. We diverted to [an alternate airport] for longer runway/crash fire rescue. We got the aircraft stopped on the runway; and were towed off the runway following the landing.
