Narrative:

Was thermaling west of [the airport]. At 2;000 ft; I could not see the field. I followed the bearing on my inflight computer toward [the airport]. Found large amounts of sink. At 1;500 AGL made call to unicom that I could not see the airport and would not make it back. At 1;000 feet I selected a field and made a normal pattern. Landed in bean field - no damage to self; aircraft or field (crop). In hindsight; I would perhaps have begun heading back to [the airport] at a higher altitude. Also; I should have called 911 to let them know it was not a crash situation and merely a land out.
