Narrative:
I entered the charlotte co traffic pattern 500' above the pattern and at mid-field. After a left downwind and left base for the active runway I was on final for the active runway. There were only 2 other planes in the pattern and on unicom at the time. Right after turning final, the passenger in the back seat excitedly noted another aircraft on a parallel course at extremely close range. I broke off and landed on the next circuit. I spoke with the other pilot upon landing about his poor judgement to enter an uncontrolled airport via a straight in approach. He seemed not to care that we almost collided. It was later discovered that he had radio problems and thus the reason he didn't hear us, and we didn't hear him. If he had entered the pattern properly both of us would have had a better chance of seeing each other.
