Narrative:
Ground crew brought to my attention something on top of the wing. I went to look at it and it looked like black nylon cord; maybe six inches long; on the top back right wing root; stuck on the side fuselage fairing. I couldn't reach it but determined it was ok to continue. Flight to and landing at [destination] was uneventful. Called maintenance to remove the debris and was told it was (in fact) a cable and the aircraft was grounded.I am new in the captain seat but have learned a valuable lesson. I will no longer assume I can determine if something is ok to continue. Maintenance personnel are the experts and I will defer to them on anything I'm not 100 percent sure of.
Original NASA ASRS Text
