Narrative:
The flight was IFR, palomar to concord. I had filed the route oceanside V23 seal beach V459 lake hughes direct shafter direct panoche V585 manteca. My clearance read as follows: V23 V459 lake hughes V165 shafter then as filed (shafter direct panoche V585 manteca). After crossing shafter I proceeded outbnd on V23. Approximately 7 NM northwest of shafter the controller asked if I was going to proceed on V23. I replied in the affirmative. I thought about this last transmission and remembered that my clearance/flight plan said I was to proceed direct panoche after shafter. I then called the controller back and admitted my error and asked for a clearance direct to panoche. The controller confirmed my clearance and cleared me direct panoche. Errors: I had filed a flight plan from memory as I did not have my charts with me when I filed. I had made a copy of my flight plan but did not have it with me in the cockpit. I feel the second item bears the most importance -- if I had a copy of my flight plan available I wouldn't have had to rely on memory to fly my clearance. Also, I was complacent due to the VMC WX at the time.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TRACK DEVIATION FOR PRIVATE SMA ON IFR FLT.
Narrative: THE FLT WAS IFR, PALOMAR TO CONCORD. I HAD FILED THE ROUTE OCEANSIDE V23 SEAL BEACH V459 LAKE HUGHES DIRECT SHAFTER DIRECT PANOCHE V585 MANTECA. MY CLRNC READ AS FOLLOWS: V23 V459 LAKE HUGHES V165 SHAFTER THEN AS FILED (SHAFTER DIRECT PANOCHE V585 MANTECA). AFTER XING SHAFTER I PROCEEDED OUTBND ON V23. APPROX 7 NM NW OF SHAFTER THE CTLR ASKED IF I WAS GOING TO PROCEED ON V23. I REPLIED IN THE AFFIRMATIVE. I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS LAST XMISSION AND REMEMBERED THAT MY CLRNC/FLT PLAN SAID I WAS TO PROCEED DIRECT PANOCHE AFTER SHAFTER. I THEN CALLED THE CTLR BACK AND ADMITTED MY ERROR AND ASKED FOR A CLRNC DIRECT TO PANOCHE. THE CTLR CONFIRMED MY CLRNC AND CLRED ME DIRECT PANOCHE. ERRORS: I HAD FILED A FLT PLAN FROM MEMORY AS I DID NOT HAVE MY CHARTS WITH ME WHEN I FILED. I HAD MADE A COPY OF MY FLT PLAN BUT DID NOT HAVE IT WITH ME IN THE COCKPIT. I FEEL THE SECOND ITEM BEARS THE MOST IMPORTANCE -- IF I HAD A COPY OF MY FLT PLAN AVAILABLE I WOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO RELY ON MEMORY TO FLY MY CLRNC. ALSO, I WAS COMPLACENT DUE TO THE VMC WX AT THE TIME.
