Narrative:

After programming departure; controller pilot datalink communication (cpdlc) revised our departure. When we changed and briefed the changes; the [SID] transition route was deleted. Flying the departure route; we deviated off the transition directly to our intermediate fix until ATC questioned our flight path. We re-entered the transition fixes and returned to our assigned course. There was no conflict with other traffic. Do not program FMC until we receive our clearance and double check any revisions completely.
