While at cruise at FL310; a sudden violent shake and vibration occurred. No fire indication; but no N1 indication on number one engine. [Advised ATC] and we requested lower altitude. Qrc reference card accomplished crew comm and communication established. Engine fire; severe damage checklist accomplished. Passenger oxygen system had been deployed automatically. Requested divert to ZZZ. We accomplished descent and approach checklist. Confirmed emergency with approach and requested assistance.
