Narrative:
Flight in a B737. At FL360; aircraft showed a fuel imbalance of 1;100 pounds with the #1 engine lower on fuel quantity. Fuel imbalance was getting gradually worse. Engine fuel flows were the same. Suspecting a fuel leak; we shut the engine down; advised ATC; and diverted to the nearest suitable airport. Landed uneventfully.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 flight crew reported experiencing a fuel imbalance in cruise flight and a possible fuel leak. After some checking; the fuel leak was confirmed; the associated engine was shut down and the flight diverted to the nearest suitable alternate. Maintenance cannot find a fuel leak and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) indicated that fuel mismanagement was the likely culprit.
