Narrative:
Upon contact with abq approach; we were given a clearance down to 6000 feet and told to expect a visual approach to runaway 3. We were expecting a right base to the runway. We then got a clearance to continue north for sequencing behind traffic. We didn't realize at the time that 6000 feet was below the FAF altitude. We continued the descent while receiving vectors for the visual.once approach turned us back to the field; we had the field in sight and accepted the visual approach to runaway 3. We realized then that 6000 feet was below the FAF altitude. We continued to maneuver at 1000 feet or more AGL until joining final to the runway and continued and landed. Our concern is why approach gave us an altitude less than 1000 feet afe and our failure to recognize it.
