Narrative:

While entering the pattern from the northwest for an upwind to runway 21 at eye had a near miss with a biplane. Made 10nm northwest radio call including intentions to enter the pattern on upwind and then mid field cross wind for runway 21.the [biplane] then made a 10 nm northeast radio call saying he was going to overfly the airport at 1900 ft; my TCAS showed him 300 feet above me and my altitude was 1800 ft with the field altimeter setting in. I then tell him I am over the north end of the reservoir at 1800 ft in the upwind for runway 21.then another aircraft calls 7nm northwest making the same entry I had made. [Biplane] says he has traffic in sight (I believe he had the other airplane 7nm in sight not me). The [biplane] appeared to be entering the upwind; I had him in sight and thought he was making a left turn so I made a right turn away from the upwind. He appeared to be 1 mile and a 100 feet above me. My student then told me he was turning right; towards us. I made a right turn; power to idle and descended to 1500 ft and the [biplane] passed over top of us. I then made a radio call announcing my position. The [biplane] then made a radio call saying he would follow in behind me. We resumed the pattern from there and he followed in behind me. The airport is a non-towered field underlying a class c airspace and I thought the airplane was transitioning through the area not entering the pattern based on his radio call 'overflying the airport'. [The biplane] was not saying intentions which led me to assume what he was doing. Multiple aircraft were trying to enter the pattern. Confusing and similar tail numbers made it difficult for the [biplane] to distinguish between two different aircraft.
