Narrative:
Proceeding south out of newark to st thomas, vi. ZNY gave us a choice of A300 or A23. We chose A300 because that was the way the company had filed us, and that was what we had loaded into the omegas. He cleared us 'A300 to dorado.' that is our normal routing. The company today had changed our filed routing to be A300 to ender, A25 to grann, and A23 to dorado. That is what we had loaded into the omegas and subsequently flew. ZNY understood our filed clearance as A300 to dorado. In passing position reports to new york, our estimate for grann was noticed by ZNY and they queried us about our route of flight. They reclred us via A300 to dorado. We turned to intercept A300. We were in range of san juan center on VHF radio, contacted them, explained the discrepancy, gave our actual coordinates, confirmed no traffic in the area and received our clearance to stt. Contributing factors: possible fatigue due to 1 hour maintenance delay and 2 hour WX/de-ice delay in newark. Change from normal routing in route filed by the company. Poor HF radio quality due to atmospheric conditions. Failure to confirm actual route clearance with ZNY. Upon realizing possible discrepancy, we displaced 20 mi west of airway until we received our new clearance and resolved the differences.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR LGT DEVIATED FROM CLRNC ROUTE BETWEEN EWR AND STT.
Narrative: PROCEEDING S OUT OF NEWARK TO ST THOMAS, VI. ZNY GAVE US A CHOICE OF A300 OR A23. WE CHOSE A300 BECAUSE THAT WAS THE WAY THE COMPANY HAD FILED US, AND THAT WAS WHAT WE HAD LOADED INTO THE OMEGAS. HE CLRED US 'A300 TO DORADO.' THAT IS OUR NORMAL ROUTING. THE COMPANY TODAY HAD CHANGED OUR FILED ROUTING TO BE A300 TO ENDER, A25 TO GRANN, AND A23 TO DORADO. THAT IS WHAT WE HAD LOADED INTO THE OMEGAS AND SUBSEQUENTLY FLEW. ZNY UNDERSTOOD OUR FILED CLRNC AS A300 TO DORADO. IN PASSING POSITION REPORTS TO NEW YORK, OUR ESTIMATE FOR GRANN WAS NOTICED BY ZNY AND THEY QUERIED US ABOUT OUR ROUTE OF FLT. THEY RECLRED US VIA A300 TO DORADO. WE TURNED TO INTERCEPT A300. WE WERE IN RANGE OF SAN JUAN CENTER ON VHF RADIO, CONTACTED THEM, EXPLAINED THE DISCREPANCY, GAVE OUR ACTUAL COORDINATES, CONFIRMED NO TFC IN THE AREA AND RECEIVED OUR CLRNC TO STT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: POSSIBLE FATIGUE DUE TO 1 HR MAINT DELAY AND 2 HR WX/DE-ICE DELAY IN NEWARK. CHANGE FROM NORMAL ROUTING IN ROUTE FILED BY THE COMPANY. POOR HF RADIO QUALITY DUE TO ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS. FAILURE TO CONFIRM ACTUAL ROUTE CLRNC WITH ZNY. UPON REALIZING POSSIBLE DISCREPANCY, WE DISPLACED 20 MI W OF AIRWAY UNTIL WE RECEIVED OUR NEW CLRNC AND RESOLVED THE DIFFERENCES.
