Flight to smo. Hand off from [nearby tower controller] occurred before leaving airspace to smo; contacted smo immediately after. Smo gave observed traffic. They called for two traffics; giving bearing and altitude. I saw one traffic not the other; mentioned I would pass behind one. Then a low level aircraft come across my nose from right to left.
