Narrative:
Flight was cleared for takeoff on runway 8R at honolulu when the aircraft was approximately 200 yds from the runway. At approximately 110 KTS during takeoff roll an abort was necessary because tower asked us to hold in position for 8 mins due to conflicting traffic. We advised tower that we were already rolling and he stated that he did not know we were on the roll and that he had issued a hold in position clearance earlier. This was not heard by our crew or acknowledged. We aborted the takeoff rolling to the end of runway 8R and used minimum braking. We taxiied back to the gate for an 80 min cooling off period. A tire change was necessary. Honolulu tower operates this shift with two controllers handling five or more functions (clearance, ground tower, departure, and arrival frequencys). Our takeoff clearance was issued to us on 118.1 and that is the frequency we were on during the takeoff roll and abort. I feel that the controllers are doing too many jobs on this shift and it should be corrected.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNCOORD UNAUTH TKOF AND SUBSEQUENT ABORT AS TWR ADVISES DEP ACFT THAT THEY HAVE AN 8 MINUTE GND HOLD ANTICIPATED.
Narrative: FLT WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 8R AT HONOLULU WHEN THE ACFT WAS APPROX 200 YDS FROM THE RWY. AT APPROX 110 KTS DURING TKOF ROLL AN ABORT WAS NECESSARY BECAUSE TWR ASKED US TO HOLD IN POS FOR 8 MINS DUE TO CONFLICTING TFC. WE ADVISED TWR THAT WE WERE ALREADY ROLLING AND HE STATED THAT HE DID NOT KNOW WE WERE ON THE ROLL AND THAT HE HAD ISSUED A HOLD IN POS CLRNC EARLIER. THIS WAS NOT HEARD BY OUR CREW OR ACKNOWLEDGED. WE ABORTED THE TKOF ROLLING TO THE END OF RWY 8R AND USED MINIMUM BRAKING. WE TAXIIED BACK TO THE GATE FOR AN 80 MIN COOLING OFF PERIOD. A TIRE CHANGE WAS NECESSARY. HONOLULU TWR OPERATES THIS SHIFT WITH TWO CTLRS HANDLING FIVE OR MORE FUNCTIONS (CLRNC, GND TWR, DEP, AND ARR FREQS). OUR TKOF CLRNC WAS ISSUED TO US ON 118.1 AND THAT IS THE FREQ WE WERE ON DURING THE TKOF ROLL AND ABORT. I FEEL THAT THE CTLRS ARE DOING TOO MANY JOBS ON THIS SHIFT AND IT SHOULD BE CORRECTED.
