Narrative:
On the sunset arrival; but being vectored to a 1L arrival. Approach control warned of a laser event 'starting'. We were hit by a very intense purple laser with what appeared to be multiple beams. We were initially hit twice; position was about 8;000 ft. And 6-7 miles southwest of airport. I asked approach if this was a laser show or someone unknown. It was not planned they stated. We were hit a couple more times which we shielded our eyes and asked for vectors to 25L to avoid further hits. We discussed in flight and on the ground if either of us were hurt; we reported to ATC and dispatch; [and] I also called operations.
