Narrative:

We were cleared onto runway 8R in atlanta. After sitting on the runway for more than two minutes; the captain queried the tower controller about us sitting on the active runway as we thought he had forgotten about us. We were told to spend some more time on the runway without any explanation. In the interest of safety; the captain found it prudent get a clearance to taxi off the runway. We got the clearance to taxi off the runway while the tower controller seemed agitated and almost offended by our request. We later on got our takeoff clearance and flew uneventfully.
