Narrative:

We were running late due to getting the aircraft late and because of a repetitive procedure due to MEL. We finally pushed from the gate. Because of flow into lax we were instructed to hold short of D8. When we finally got further taxi clearance we got cleared to taxi to runway 24L via 'east'. We complied with the taxi instructions and switched to tower. Tower asked us why we didn't hold short of 'V' and we told him our taxi clearance was to taxi to runway 24L. He informed us we were supposed to hold short of 'V' in accordance with a taxi instruction sign. At this point we got clearance to take off and the rest of the flight was uneventful.later as I reviewed the [briefing page] for lax I noticed the paragraph about the hold short of 'V' instructions. I believe I missed the note because we were running late and because I was busy on the ground due to the requirement to supervise the refueling and dipstick procedure in accordance with the MEL. I never saw the taxi sign with the hold short instruction. Perhaps it is hard to see when turning onto 'east' from D8 while focusing on the turn and the pre takeoff procedures.I also don't believe I have ever seen this type of taxi sign that instructs a crew to hold short of a taxiway while having been cleared to a runway. So my expectation bias was definitely to taxi full length to runway 24L since that was the taxi clearance. My suggestion is to have the requirement and sign to hold short of 'V' removed; since it sends conflicting information about the taxi clearance. Instructions to hold short of a taxiway should be the responsibility of ATC. If a crew receives instruction to taxi to a runway; the expectation bias is to do just that.
