Narrative:

Enroute we received ACARS from dispatch requesting that we bring engine #3 to idle due to excessive oil consumption. We brought up the engine page and confirmed this with engine #3 indicating 8 quarts of oil remaining. All other engine indications were in the normal parameters. With the engine at idle the FMC indicated that it would be necessary to descend from FL330 to FL310. We were told by [ATC] we were not authorized to descend due to another aircraft close in trail 1;000 feet below. At that time we [requested priority handling] with ATC to descend; established communication with the [other aircraft]; offset 15 miles to the right and brought the aircraft down to FL310. I observed [the other aircraft] descend as well on the nd; I assume at request of ATC for the emergency aircraft. We were then able to cancel emergency status with ATC and continued as planned while monitoring engine oil consumption and fuel balance.this engine was written up for excessive oil consumption on the previous 5 flights. As a crew we need to look through the log book and make note of any maintenance trends that might impact our flight.
