Narrative:
First officer flying. We were cleared direct to grd and unarm five arrival to clt. 11 mi south of grd center cleared us to colon intersection to hold as published, 20 mi legs. By the time we found colon on low altitude map holding speeds center asked if we were in the turn. We said yes. We turned inbound but we failed to change first officer VOR to irq and did not see mistake until 7 mi north of grd. To help reduce this error we feel center could have said that the holding fix was behind us and/or cleared us to intercept to radial or victor airway on the irq inbound radial. Having to read the chart and beginning the approach phase (i.e., getting ATIS for clt and company communication) while the holding clearance was given added to workload. Supplemental information from acn 139776: 11 mi from greenwood we were instructed to hold at colon intersection. (Colon was located 10 mi behind us). No reversal instructions were given to proceed to colon. We located colon intersection 7 mi to the north of colliers VOR which we mistook for greenwood. We began holding 7 mi north of greenwood VOR.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG OVERSHOT HOLDING PATTERN. HELD AT WRONG POSITION.
Narrative: F/O FLYING. WE WERE CLRED DIRECT TO GRD AND UNARM FIVE ARRIVAL TO CLT. 11 MI S OF GRD CENTER CLRED US TO COLON INTXN TO HOLD AS PUBLISHED, 20 MI LEGS. BY THE TIME WE FOUND COLON ON LOW ALT MAP HOLDING SPEEDS CENTER ASKED IF WE WERE IN THE TURN. WE SAID YES. WE TURNED INBND BUT WE FAILED TO CHANGE F/O VOR TO IRQ AND DID NOT SEE MISTAKE UNTIL 7 MI N OF GRD. TO HELP REDUCE THIS ERROR WE FEEL CENTER COULD HAVE SAID THAT THE HOLDING FIX WAS BEHIND US AND/OR CLRED US TO INTERCEPT TO RADIAL OR VICTOR AIRWAY ON THE IRQ INBND RADIAL. HAVING TO READ THE CHART AND BEGINNING THE APCH PHASE (I.E., GETTING ATIS FOR CLT AND COMPANY COM) WHILE THE HOLDING CLRNC WAS GIVEN ADDED TO WORKLOAD. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 139776: 11 MI FROM GREENWOOD WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO HOLD AT COLON INTXN. (COLON WAS LOCATED 10 MI BEHIND US). NO REVERSAL INSTRUCTIONS WERE GIVEN TO PROCEED TO COLON. WE LOCATED COLON INTXN 7 MI TO THE N OF COLLIERS VOR WHICH WE MISTOOK FOR GREENWOOD. WE BEGAN HOLDING 7 MI N OF GREENWOOD VOR.
