Narrative:
Conditions were light rain and slightly restricted visibility at dusk. After pushback from gate at sna; ground control cleared us to 'taxi alpha; left on juliet; back-taxi on runway 20L; left on lima; hold short of runway 20R.' the first officer correctly read back the clearance; and I verbally repeated the clearance via the intercom. I believe we both had a good shared mental model of our taxi route. As I turned onto juliet I reached up and turned on all exterior lights and turned to look out the left window; and immediately saw a [corporate jet] taxiing down taxiway charlie. I immediately applied the brakes and simultaneously ATC made a transmission '(company); stop.' we came within 25' of the aircraft's wing. The other aircraft did not appear to slow down. After a short silence; ground control transmitted; 'sorry about that (company); continue your taxi.' we proceeded to the runway without further incident.
