Narrative:
This was an IFR flight plan from lake tahoe to oak. Our IFR clearance was richy 5 departure, spook transition, climb and maintain 13000', expect FL200, 5 mins, etc. Approximately 10 DME southeast of swr, I leveled at 13000' and departure cleared us left turn, direct eca VOR and issued further climb to FL200. Then the controller added, 'for your information, you are supposed to maintain 12000' until crossing richy.' we immediately reviewed the SID again and saw the restriction does apply southeast and swbnd, and not inbound on the 117 degree right. This was clearly an oversight on our part, but given the possibility of misinterp and the length of the text describing the departure, I feel that similar deviations could be avoided by ATC using more explicit wording when issuing the clearance--such as, 'cleared richy 5 departure, spook transition, climb maintain 13000' with richy restriction, ' etc. For my part, this event taught me once again the valuable lesson of paying strict attention to every detail of SID, STAR descriptions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ATX MLG OVERCLIMBS CROSSING RESTRICTION ON RICHY 5 DEP FROM SOUTH LAKE TAHOE.
Narrative: THIS WAS AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM LAKE TAHOE TO OAK. OUR IFR CLRNC WAS RICHY 5 DEP, SPOOK TRANSITION, CLB AND MAINTAIN 13000', EXPECT FL200, 5 MINS, ETC. APPROX 10 DME SE OF SWR, I LEVELED AT 13000' AND DEP CLRED US LEFT TURN, DIRECT ECA VOR AND ISSUED FURTHER CLB TO FL200. THEN THE CTLR ADDED, 'FOR YOUR INFO, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO MAINTAIN 12000' UNTIL XING RICHY.' WE IMMEDIATELY REVIEWED THE SID AGAIN AND SAW THE RESTRICTION DOES APPLY SE AND SWBND, AND NOT INBND ON THE 117 DEG R. THIS WAS CLEARLY AN OVERSIGHT ON OUR PART, BUT GIVEN THE POSSIBILITY OF MISINTERP AND THE LENGTH OF THE TEXT DESCRIBING THE DEP, I FEEL THAT SIMILAR DEVIATIONS COULD BE AVOIDED BY ATC USING MORE EXPLICIT WORDING WHEN ISSUING THE CLRNC--SUCH AS, 'CLRED RICHY 5 DEP, SPOOK TRANSITION, CLB MAINTAIN 13000' WITH RICHY RESTRICTION, ' ETC. FOR MY PART, THIS EVENT TAUGHT ME ONCE AGAIN THE VALUABLE LESSON OF PAYING STRICT ATTN TO EVERY DETAIL OF SID, STAR DESCRIPTIONS.
