Narrative:
Rotary wing aircraft was on runway holding position prior to takeoff after being cleared for option for runway 23. Just prior to lift-off; noticed C-17 over-flight of our aircraft directly overhead at approximately 200 feet AGL during its low approach or aborted landing. C-17 crew queried tower and asked what the status of the runway was. PIC of our aircraft also queried tower to verify that we are/were cleared for the option on runway 23. Tower controller replied that he thought we were already in the traffic pattern. Our crew was aided with night vision goggles (nvg); with position and anti-collision lights on. We were located approximately mid-field at the time of the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
