Narrative:
Shortly after switching frequency to ord approach control at 8000' MSL, the flight acknowledged and complied with a clearance to turn right to 090 degrees and descend to 3000'. The clearance was heard by all 3 crew members and all agree it was issued to air carrier ab. Although still approximately 35 mi from landing, the clearance contained the request to expedite, so it was not immediately questions. Shortly thereafter, the approach controller stated that he believed the clearance was issued to another flight and we received instructions to return to the arrival flow of traffic. I spoke with approach control after landing and was advised that no traffic conflict had resulted and safety parameters were not exceeded. Supplemental information from acn 139978: ord approach replied, 'air carrier xa, say heading.' we replied, '090 degrees, assigned.' he said that clearance was for air carrier sb. I said, 'well, we read it back.' he then gave us a turn to north and a climb to 8000' MSL, and informed us that he'd have to pull the tapes for investigation.

Title: ALT DEVIATION. EXCURSION FROM ASSIGNED. TRACK DEVIATION. RESPONSE TO WRONG CALL SING. READBACK HEARBACK PROBLEM.
Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER SWITCHING FREQ TO ORD APCH CTL AT 8000' MSL, THE FLT ACKNOWLEDGED AND COMPLIED WITH A CLRNC TO TURN RIGHT TO 090 DEGS AND DSND TO 3000'. THE CLRNC WAS HEARD BY ALL 3 CREW MEMBERS AND ALL AGREE IT WAS ISSUED TO ACR AB. ALTHOUGH STILL APPROX 35 MI FROM LNDG, THE CLRNC CONTAINED THE REQUEST TO EXPEDITE, SO IT WAS NOT IMMEDIATELY QUESTIONS. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE APCH CTLR STATED THAT HE BELIEVED THE CLRNC WAS ISSUED TO ANOTHER FLT AND WE RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS TO RETURN TO THE ARR FLOW OF TFC. I SPOKE WITH APCH CTL AFTER LNDG AND WAS ADVISED THAT NO TFC CONFLICT HAD RESULTED AND SAFETY PARAMETERS WERE NOT EXCEEDED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 139978: ORD APCH REPLIED, 'ACR XA, SAY HDG.' WE REPLIED, '090 DEGS, ASSIGNED.' HE SAID THAT CLRNC WAS FOR ACR SB. I SAID, 'WELL, WE READ IT BACK.' HE THEN GAVE US A TURN TO N AND A CLB TO 8000' MSL, AND INFORMED US THAT HE'D HAVE TO PULL THE TAPES FOR INVESTIGATION.
