Narrative:
Flight was cleared to fly the dca 328 degree right after departure. This departure route was discussed by both myself (captain) and the first officer who would be flying the departure. The departure routing was again discussed during th takeoff briefing. After liftoff I told the first officer to begin his turn to intercept the 328 degree right. (He later said he didn't hear me and was awaiting vectors from ATC.) tower came on and told us to turn left to intercept the dca 328 degree right. The first officer still didn't response. I told him to turn immediately to avoid P56, at which time he initiated a shallow bank to the left. I then stated in no uncertain terms, 'get this airplane on the 328 right,' and proceeded in helping him turn the aircraft. During the turn I thought I could see the river below us through the clouds. Neither tower nor departure indicated an airspace violation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FL FLYING DEP AT DCA TOLD TO TURN TO 328 DEGREE RADIAL FLEW STRAIGHT OUT RWY HEADING. NICKED OR WAS VERY CLOSE TO PROHIBITED P56.
Narrative: FLT WAS CLRED TO FLY THE DCA 328 DEG R AFTER DEP. THIS DEP ROUTE WAS DISCUSSED BY BOTH MYSELF (CAPT) AND THE F/O WHO WOULD BE FLYING THE DEP. THE DEP ROUTING WAS AGAIN DISCUSSED DURING TH TKOF BRIEFING. AFTER LIFTOFF I TOLD THE F/O TO BEGIN HIS TURN TO INTERCEPT THE 328 DEG R. (HE LATER SAID HE DIDN'T HEAR ME AND WAS AWAITING VECTORS FROM ATC.) TWR CAME ON AND TOLD US TO TURN LEFT TO INTERCEPT THE DCA 328 DEG R. THE F/O STILL DIDN'T RESPONSE. I TOLD HIM TO TURN IMMEDIATELY TO AVOID P56, AT WHICH TIME HE INITIATED A SHALLOW BANK TO THE LEFT. I THEN STATED IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, 'GET THIS AIRPLANE ON THE 328 R,' AND PROCEEDED IN HELPING HIM TURN THE ACFT. DURING THE TURN I THOUGHT I COULD SEE THE RIVER BELOW US THROUGH THE CLOUDS. NEITHER TWR NOR DEP INDICATED AN AIRSPACE VIOLATION.
