Narrative:

I was on a progress check, training for my INS rating. It was a beautiful day with many aircraft coming in. I had asked for clearance 15 mins before time, but we ended up cutting it close with incoming traffic. We took off on time, but I failed to transmit right away. I wanted to get the aircraft stabilized and not rush doing anything. (Being it was a progress check, I was nervous!) when the controller told us we were 3 mins late in reporting, I did not realize I should have told him exactly what was going on, but I did ask if it was ok to proceed. It wasn't until we landed that the chief flight instrument told me I could be placed in error for not having made myself clear. So here it is, a descriptive explanation!
