San jose tower controller reported departing an aircraft after being told to hold by the departure controller. Reporter did not use the hold placard made just for this purpose.

Narrative:
Toga [sector] gave sjc aircraft Y release for departure and asked to hold departures after. I was anticipating and pre-planning local control 1 being combined with controller in charge due to staffing going down from 4 to 2 controllers for break and go home time. I forgot to use the hold placard and instead used line up and wait (luaw) for aircraft X before the controller in charge goes home and I assume the position and cannot luaw. After I cleared aircraft X for takeoff as the aircraft tags up departure end toga on the shout line says you are on 'hold'.use the hold placard as soon as nct says hold departures. Sjc should have enough staffing that will prevent us from combining local control 1 with controller in charge.

I forgot to use the hold placard and instead used Line Up And Wait (LUAW) for Aircraft X before the CIC goes home and I assume the position and cannot LUAW. After I cleared Aircraft X for takeoff as the aircraft tags up departure end Toga on the shout line says you are on 'hold'.Use the hold placard as soon as NCT says hold departures. SJC should have enough staffing that will prevent us from combining Local Control 1 with CIC.
