Narrative:
ATC frequency was extremely busy. It was difficult to get a word in. We were given clearance to expedite descent and vectors cutting off much of the arrival. First officer was flying and was configuring for the RNAV approach. We were set up well and fully briefed. We were given vectors direct to the IAF which is a base leg. It was not clear if we were cleared for the approach. By the time I could get a word in and ask we were then high on the profile. We determined we would need to go around. I planned to wait until FAF to report the need so we could execute a toga go around. Just prior to the FAF ATC asked if we would be able to get down and we reported no. We were given a heading and altitude to fly and execute miss.
