Narrative:

Had flown down to mia with weather reported less than wonderful. Had alternates of pbi and fll. As we are nearing mia we hear approach putting pbi arrivals in holding. Down one alternate. We set up for 26L ILS; as that is what everyone ahead is getting. We're assigned RNAV GPS 26R. At the time IMC; cleared for approach. Just crossing zarer at 1500; starting descent we get a call that says maintain 1500 ft light civil passing through under you at 750 ft. No TCAS (a cirrus). We return to 1500. We are also 170 kts to zarer. Now cleared to continue approach; inside zarer at 1500 ft and 170 kts. Gear is down flaps are at 25; and we start down. Behind proverbial power curve. Tower says can you get down. I reply we'll see. We break out at 1300; high and fast. Now VMC I push over and do shallow south's. Too fast now for final flaps we pass 1000 ft. I call unstable; but have till 500 ft. Now as I remark to first officer. He responds 'perhaps so; but we're below 1000 ft not fully configured.' I respond 'oh you're right; toga flaps 15!' and off we go. We climbed to 3000 on a 270 heading. Put the autopilot on and discussed options. As weather was closing I said call approach and see if we can get back in quickly. Not so fast! Airport now closed; next 3 approaches go missed. We beat feet over to lauderdale. As first officer was talking on radio; I send diversion report to dispatch and get rewarded with a no comm light. Filed alternate....we go and land. As we roll out the aircraft behind us reports 25 kt loss on final. Then the cirrus lands. We sit as no one knew we were coming. We finally get to a gate and I call dispatch and tell him where we are. He asks 'what are you doing there' I replied read diversion report. He remarks;'didn't receive; oh by the way; what was your on/in/and fuel?' we refuel grab new papers; settle the passenger that are continuing and go back to mia; shoot visual and then wait for another 25 minutes in line to get to gate due to ground stoppage opening up. Crappy weather closing in; in a hurry to get there before closed out; unexpected a/C conflict and 'can do' attitude which; while an asset most times was somewhat detrimental in this situation. Abandon approach! As soon as the light civil was reported and we were now high and fast. Let's go somewhere else.
