Narrative:

I currently have a multi engine commercial with instrument certificate with a single engine private pilot certificate. I do not hold instructor ratings.on behalf of the flight school I began conducting discovery flights with new students in a single engine using my private pilot certificate. It was my understanding that this was allowed under the conditions of private pilot carriage as I was not receiving financial benefit or reimbursement for these flights. The students were gifted these flights by the flight school.it was bought to my attention by the company safety director that these flights contravene the regulations relating to private pilot carriage due to the fact they allow me to build hours and the primary business of the company is flight training. When informed of this I immediately ceased conducting discovery flights.this was not an intentional oversight on my behalf; I did seek the advice of senior pilots however I do understand that it is my responsibility to ensure regulatory compliance where I am the pilot in command and in future if I am in doubt I will seek official guidance from the local FAA FSDO rather than the opinions of others.
