Narrative:
Cleared onto runway to hold. Told to turn left and exit runway to make way for landing traffic. Other traffic partially blocked the #1 position at the hold line for the runway. I tried to completely clear the runway area but could not. Tower was advised of such and relayed to the landing traffic. No apparent conflict occurred and no further mention of the incident was recorded. Subsequently reclred for takeoff. I should have taxied up to the next taxiway (300'), which would have presented no conflict other than sequencing for takeoff. The urgency in the tower controller's voice prompted me to turn left immediately and clear the runway. A little clearer instructions would have helped.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH TWR INSTRUCTIONS TO CLEAR RWY AFTER BEING IN POSITION FOR TKOF.
Narrative: CLRED ONTO RWY TO HOLD. TOLD TO TURN LEFT AND EXIT RWY TO MAKE WAY FOR LNDG TFC. OTHER TFC PARTIALLY BLOCKED THE #1 POS AT THE HOLD LINE FOR THE RWY. I TRIED TO COMPLETELY CLR THE RWY AREA BUT COULD NOT. TWR WAS ADVISED OF SUCH AND RELAYED TO THE LNDG TFC. NO APPARENT CONFLICT OCCURRED AND NO FURTHER MENTION OF THE INCIDENT WAS RECORDED. SUBSEQUENTLY RECLRED FOR TKOF. I SHOULD HAVE TAXIED UP TO THE NEXT TXWY (300'), WHICH WOULD HAVE PRESENTED NO CONFLICT OTHER THAN SEQUENCING FOR TKOF. THE URGENCY IN THE TWR CTLR'S VOICE PROMPTED ME TO TURN LEFT IMMEDIATELY AND CLR THE RWY. A LITTLE CLEARER INSTRUCTIONS WOULD HAVE HELPED.
