Narrative:
Arrived late in bhm on the third leg of a 4 leg, 8 hour day. (Last leg was scheduled as a 19 mi hop to montgomery and layover.) gate agent said he had no passenger boarding in bhm, just through passenger to mgm, so ground time would be short. We reviewed our proposed route of flight (bhm V7 mgm, 15000'), completed all checklists, started engines, taxied out and promptly proceeded to takeoff west/O having received an ATC route clearance from clearance delivery. Only clue to our oversight came when departure control asked us to reset our transponder code. Rest of flight was uneventful and we neither caused nor experienced any traffic conflicts. Incidentally, ground time in bhm (block in to block out) was a scant 10 mins. Ironically, on the leg prior to bhm, the crew had its first exposure to the automated pre-departure clearance program at dfw.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FOLLOWING A SHORT TRANSIT ACR MLG TOOK OFF FROM BHM WITHOUT ROUTE CLRNC.
Narrative: ARRIVED LATE IN BHM ON THE THIRD LEG OF A 4 LEG, 8 HR DAY. (LAST LEG WAS SCHEDULED AS A 19 MI HOP TO MONTGOMERY AND LAYOVER.) GATE AGENT SAID HE HAD NO PAX BOARDING IN BHM, JUST THROUGH PAX TO MGM, SO GND TIME WOULD BE SHORT. WE REVIEWED OUR PROPOSED RTE OF FLT (BHM V7 MGM, 15000'), COMPLETED ALL CHKLISTS, STARTED ENGS, TAXIED OUT AND PROMPTLY PROCEEDED TO TKOF W/O HAVING RECEIVED AN ATC RTE CLRNC FROM CLRNC DELIVERY. ONLY CLUE TO OUR OVERSIGHT CAME WHEN DEP CTL ASKED US TO RESET OUR XPONDER CODE. REST OF FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL AND WE NEITHER CAUSED NOR EXPERIENCED ANY TFC CONFLICTS. INCIDENTALLY, GND TIME IN BHM (BLOCK IN TO BLOCK OUT) WAS A SCANT 10 MINS. IRONICALLY, ON THE LEG PRIOR TO BHM, THE CREW HAD ITS FIRST EXPOSURE TO THE AUTOMATED PRE-DEP CLRNC PROGRAM AT DFW.
