Narrative:
After departing and selecting landing gear up; the gear failed to come up and a hyd sys 1 fail caution message was presented on the EICAS. It was clear the gear did not fully retract. We then notified the flight attendant of the situation and that we would be returning to [departure airport]. We ran the appropiate checklists and were able to fully extend the gear manually and safely return.
