Narrative:
Descending from altitude to 15;000 ft socal approach advised us we had VFR traffic at [our] 10 o'clock position at 16;500 ft flying left to right. We shallowed out our descent to 500 FPM. We got a TA; then an RA. We followed the heads up display guidance and leveled off at 17;000 ft. A business jet crossed just off the nose 500 ft below us. I thought the controller should have vectored one or both of us to a different course instead of hoping we would see each other.
