Narrative:
After takeoff on runway 26R, I continued on runway heading awaiting and expecting turn clearance from departure control. The departure controller informed me, upon checking in after the tower to departure frequency change, that he had expected me to proceed direct to the pdz VOR immediately after takeoff. After his questioning and a subsequent closer look at the SID, I agree that the SID does require a pilot initiated turn but it doesn't state when it is required. To give further clarification to the prado tower departure, it would be helpful to amplify when the left turn is required when departing runway 26L/right. Please note that runways 8L/right specifically states to make a right turn direct pdz VOR within 1 mi. With the absence of a note for runways 26L/right, there is the implication that a left turn direct pdz can be made at the pilot's discretion or at least there is no requirement to make the turn as soon as possible.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF ADVANCED WDB FAILED TO TURN AFTER TKOF RWY 26 AT ONT.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF ON RWY 26R, I CONTINUED ON RWY HDG AWAITING AND EXPECTING TURN CLRNC FROM DEP CTL. THE DEP CTLR INFORMED ME, UPON CHKING IN AFTER THE TWR TO DEP FREQ CHANGE, THAT HE HAD EXPECTED ME TO PROCEED DIRECT TO THE PDZ VOR IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF. AFTER HIS QUESTIONING AND A SUBSEQUENT CLOSER LOOK AT THE SID, I AGREE THAT THE SID DOES REQUIRE A PLT INITIATED TURN BUT IT DOESN'T STATE WHEN IT IS REQUIRED. TO GIVE FURTHER CLARIFICATION TO THE PRADO TWR DEP, IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO AMPLIFY WHEN THE L TURN IS REQUIRED WHEN DEPARTING RWY 26L/R. PLEASE NOTE THAT RWYS 8L/R SPECIFICALLY STATES TO MAKE A R TURN DIRECT PDZ VOR WITHIN 1 MI. WITH THE ABSENCE OF A NOTE FOR RWYS 26L/R, THERE IS THE IMPLICATION THAT A L TURN DIRECT PDZ CAN BE MADE AT THE PLT'S DISCRETION OR AT LEAST THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT TO MAKE THE TURN ASAP.
